No Shave November

No Shave November or Movember refers to an annual charity event where men don’t shave, groom, or cut their facial hair for the entire month as a way of raising awareness and money to fight cancer. (online Slang Dictionary https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/no-shave-november/). I’m convinced men participate to compete to see who can grow the most hair. Don’t get me wrong – it’s a great idea to remind men to take care of their health – but I’ve never been a fan of beards. They can be unkempt, unruly, and one wonders how clean they are.

This dislike is strange because my dad always had a beard. He loved to threaten us with whisker rubs on our cheeks. This, of course, cause much screaming and running as he chased us. Dad was a very young looking teacher and wanted to appear older so he grew a beard. After many years he decided to cut it off. The no beard look caused dismay from his wife and children and some laughter from his siblings. He quickly grew it back.

To celebrate Movember, I’m posting photos of some bearded and mustached ancestors. Please enjoy them.

This stern looking man is Reuben Clarence Taylor, my 3 great grandfather; born about 1831 in Ontario, Canada and died in 1911 in Saskatchewan, Canada. He would fit in very well with the Movember Movement except for the neatness of his facial hair.

Next is John Wesley Miller, the son of Thomas Miller, my 3 great grandfather. Thomas is debonair with a rather elegant mustache and I love his neck tie and pin.

I am not quite sure where this man fits into my family. He has to be related to the Cranston side because I recognize Mary Bryan nee Cranston behind him. His mustache would be the envy of many Movember men. Let me know if you can identify him.

This is said to be William Titchworth. The picture was taken at the Dore Studio in San Francisco in the late 1800’s. What a splendid and tidy beard he has!

This is my favourite picture.! His beard and mustache are spectacular. I would love to know how he got waves in his beard. This is Ira Titchworth, son of William Titchworth and brother-in-law to Reuben Clarence Taylor.
